13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

In this Sunday’s Gospel,  Jesus presents the challenging cost and the immense reward of discipleship. He makes it clear that following Him requires total allegiance, stating that anyone who loves father or mother, or son or daughter, more than Him is not worthy of Him. This is not a call to love our families less, but a reminder that our love for God must be the foundational relationship that orders everything else in our lives.

Taking up our cross and following Christ means being willing to suffer for the sake of the truth and to lay down our own selfish ambitions. Jesus reveals a profound spiritual paradox: whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for His sake will find it. True life is not discovered by gripping tightly to our own comfort, but by surrendering ourselves completely to His holy will.

The Gospel concludes with a beautiful promise regarding hospitality and generosity. Jesus assures us that whoever receives His disciples receives Him, and that even a cup of cold water given to a little one because they are a disciple will not lose its reward. This highlights the sacred value of supporting the mission of the Church and showing kindness to those who carry the Gospel into the world.

In our daily lives, this Sunday invites us to examine our priorities and ask ourselves what we are holding back from God. It reassures us that no sacrifice made for Christ is ever hidden from His sight, and no act of charity is too small to bear eternal fruit. When we give Him everything, we receive a reward that far exceeds anything this world can offer.
