12th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

On the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A), Jesus offers the powerful command “Do not be afraid” three distinct times. He speaks these words to His Apostles as He prepares to send them out into a world that will often oppose and misunderstand their mission, reminding them that they are never alone.

Christ does not promise an easy path, but He does promise an enduring, providential care that outlasts any earthly trial. He assures us that truth will ultimately prevail, explaining that nothing is covered up that will not eventually be uncovered. In moments when faith is mocked or hidden, we are called to speak the truth clearly in the light, trusting in God’s perfect timing.

To illustrate the boundless value of a human soul, Jesus uses the beautiful imagery of the sparrows, noting that not one falls to the ground without the Father knowing. He reminds us that even the hairs on our head are all numbered, and that we are worth far more than many sparrows. This calls us to a holy fortitude, redirecting our fear away from those who can only harm the body, and focusing instead on preserving our eternal relationship with God.

In our daily lives, fear can easily paralyse our witness, making us worry about judgment or social isolation. This Sunday is a beautiful reassurance that we are intimately known and fiercely guarded by a loving Father. When we find the courage to acknowledge Christ before others, He promises to acknowledge us before His Father in heaven.
