3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

On this Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we witness the dawn of Christ’s public ministry in Galilee. Following the arrest of the Baptist, Jesus withdraws to Capernaum, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

The light of Christ begins with a call to conversion. Like John, Jesus preaches, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” This repentance is the necessary gateway to the Kingdom; it is the radical reorientation of the soul from the shadow of death toward the light of grace.

The Gospel then describes the calling of the first Apostles: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Their response is the hallmark of true discipleship: “Immediately they left their nets and followed him.” In a traditional context, we see here the origin of the Apostolic Succession and the sublime dignity of the priestly vocation. These men were called to leave behind the “nets” of their worldly anxieties and familial ties to become “fishers of men,” casting the net of the Gospel into the stormy seas of the world to gather souls for the Barque of Peter.

Jesus’ ministry is summarised by teaching, preaching, and healing. He addresses the whole person—mind, soul, and body—restoring what was broken by the Fall. This Sunday challenges us to examine our own “nets.” What attachments prevent us from following the Master more closely? Let us pray for the grace to respond to His call with the same promptness as the Apostles, allowing the light of His truth to dispel every darkness in our lives.
