33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Yr C
On this Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, as the liturgical year draws to a close, the Church directs our gaze to the Four Last Things. In the Gospel, while the crowds admire the precious stones of the Temple, Our Lord makes a shocking prophecy: “there will not be left a stone upon another.”
He predicts the destruction of Jerusalem—a historical event that serves as a terrifying prefigurement of the end of the world. Jesus reminds us that all earthly glory is fleeting. Even the most magnificent structures of human hands will crumble. We must place our hope not in the passing structures of this world, but in the eternal Kingdom of God.
Jesus also foretells persecution. He warns that we will be hated because of His name. Yet, He promises that “not a hair on your head will be destroyed” in the spiritual sense. The path to salvation is not one of comfort, but of the Cross.
His final command is the key: “By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” This calls for the virtue of heroic patience. In the face of worldly chaos, crumbling institutions, and personal trial, we are called to stand firm in the Faith, knowing that Christ is the Lord of History and that our endurance in grace will win the crown of eternal life.
